When I was a Soldier.

Chapter 1

How does the story start? The story starts with three girls in the middle of the desert.
Who is the Narrator? Valerie.
Where was she born? Val was born in Nice, in France.
Where does she live? They live in Beersheva.
How are the feelings expressed? “this is the arsehole of the world, she goes on , and nothing special ever came out of the arsehole of the world.
What is the tone so far? Whining/ interesting.
What do you think their in the middle of the dessert? As she spoke ,”Im free now, “ She is no longer her parents nice little girl.
List all characters so far: Valerie the narrator , Yulia and Rahel her best friends. Iliana, & Rafi the Boss.
What is the setting? In a land , in the Negev Desert in Israel.
What is the problem in the story? In six months , at the latest they’ll be changing out of the own into all that army stuff. Into Soldier girls. All three Yulia , Rahel and Valerie.


Arsehole: vulgar slang for anus

Chapter 2

What happened to Valerie? Six times a week Yulia bellows her name as she passes beneath her window on her way to school.
What excuse does Valerie use when not ready? The fact that she’s still in bed not ready .. But , thinking about what to wear? What to choose? And what not.
Why does Valerie start to panic? Valerie starts to panic because her first bac exams , and she doesn’t know what to wear.
What’s with the history teacher? Half of the girls in school have been or still are in love with him.
Why does Val take forever to get dressed for exams? She wanted to feel good - , pretty , even just for the sake of it.
How does Val know when Rahel is worried or upset? She always refuses to express any emotions in words.
When do exams start? The exam starts at eight o clock precisely. And will end at ten o clock.
How does the exam go? Her wrist are hurting but overall she’s pleased with herself.
How does she feel about the bac? She believes she will pass the bac, though , that’s as good as definite.
When do results come in? Results come in October , where she believes she’ll then be a soilder.

CHapter 3

How did Val’s cousin feel about her going into the army? Her cousin were completely gob smacked.
In other words what else is the army to these soldiers? Among other things, the army is our very own, commedia dell’arte.
Why does Valerie feel like a stranger , a foreigner? Because a country in which death is conceivable from as early as 18 , but eventually doesn’t make anyone more intelligent they are convinced that love lies waiting in those army bases surrounded by barbed wire , under a canvas tent in a sleeping bad she knows because its her country and she understands all this physically.
Why is Val angry? She’s angry at her dude because he spoiled her scenario.
How was her last day at work? She felt like telling them all to fuck off with their words which mean nothing to her , that she felt more grumpy , unhappy and angry without really knowing why?
Why does a book and a notebook important to have? She believes its essential for survival.
When does Valeria take off? September 19th.
Where is everybody when Valerie needs them? Everybody is no where to be found as if she the day don’t exist for her.
What phone calls is Valerie waiting for? She’s waiting for important ones from her bestfriends.
Who suddenly shows up at her house? Rahel , Yulia and Freddy all show up hugging and kissing eachother for her last day and listen and talk to her about whats coming her way .<3

Chapter 4
What time does Valerie wake up ? Valerie wakes up half hour past six.
What time does she need to be at the recruitment office? In two hours.
Who takes Valerie to the recruitment office? Freddy takes Valerie to the Recruitment office.
What the recruitment office like? The recruitment office is like a cattle market of soldiers.
Why does Mum promise herself not to cry? Her mum didn’t want to cry. The height of there emotion, their tears are flowing.
How does Valerie feel when they call her up next? She bites her lips, and takes it as she goes.
What happens once she’s settled in her bus? Once she settles in her seat the crowd huddles around the bus and gesticulating their love , their goodbyes and their encouragements.
How is the ride so far for Valerie? The girl next to her gives her a reproachful look. And tells her so information she wasn’t aware of.
Where do they spend the day? They spend the day at the reception base, where they’ll be taking there classes.
How has the first ten hours gone? She states: were on the road . Im in uniform , sitting next to a girl I already feel really close to , and shes in uniform too.

Chapter 5
What does Valerie want to do daily? She wants to make scrupulous notes on the events of the day, and particularly what she’s been feeling.
How does Valerie feel about the day? As if it’s been taken a few hours to catapult her into an alien world.
How did it feel for them having their uniform on? Valerie felt different , but she noticed that all were talking differently since they’ve put it on.
Were is Valerie heading? They are now traveling towards Hadera. to the north of Tel Aviv.
When the bus was leaving why does Valerie smile at the bus? Valerie smiles at the bus because she though about something and she just felt sorry for her.
Who is Tali? Tali is the girl that sat next to Valerie on the Bus.
Who is their regimental commander? Lieutenant Inbar Katz is their regimental commander.
Four the next four weeks where will they have class? For the next four weeks they will have classes on Base 80 in Regiment 3.
New Rules:? For now on they are to march everywhere on the base when they are under her command. Marching always starts with the left foot. They must perfectly line up and in step and must be attentive and follow the instructions half turn right and half turn left.
Why does she feel the need to defend herself on reading? She believes just because they got a uniform on doesn’t mean that they should uneducated.

Chapter 6

What’s disturbing for Valerie? She’ thinks its disturbing about being woken by someone you hardly know in the dead of the night.
What time is morning in the army? 4 o ‘ clock.
What is the first thing you do when you wake up? Be ready & have the bed done.
How many girl soldiers are in the company? There are twenty soldiers in the company.
How does there morning go? Every minute is accounted for, everything we do is under orders.
What kind of gun do they first receive? Uzi military pistols.
What happens if the gun is lost or stolen? They incur seven years in prison if they get lost or stolen.
What does Habaita mean? It means “Going Home!” be ready and wait for their bus.
When do they come back? That following midday ,Sunday.
What cant be said when your in the army? Anything that isn't confidential is secret.

Chapter 7
Did Valerie make it back on time ? She got back to the base late.. But explained that she lived in the south.
What Eynat happy to see Valerie? They were more then happy to see each other, and that eynat has said she's the best out of all friends she made yet.
Does Valerie get in trouble for being late? She don’t think she’ll be because she hasn’t been punished yet.
How was their first run? They had to run with their equipment it was as if someone's pushing me the whole time, ordering me to get up the minute I threaten to drop.
How was the lesson on shooting in the prone position? She felt as if every time I handle my weapon like if it were two people at the same time .
what did they last learn? To end the day on a beautiful note , we started learning how to march in information for parades.
What is a eucalyptus tree? It is a special tree , that reminded her of childhood and helps her in all kinds.
How is she liking the military so far? As if she got precious little left in her brain.

Chapter 8
Where is Valerie going? Valerie is going back home.
Where does Valerie end up? Valerie ends up in the middle of the dessert.
How does Valerie feel about going home? She feels like half of her is at the base and half of her is at home.
Will things ever be the same with her life? She believes that nothing can unite those two worlds , that she will just have to make her own arrangements to cope with a double life.
Who does Valerie miss? Her sister isnt home , so , she’s beginning to miss her.
How does she feel about being a soilder? As if a soldier is a sort of adult with even more responsibilities than her parents.
Does she feel like things have change? Yeah , she feels like its been such a brutal change.
What is Valerie's top dream? She said she wanted to meet the man of her life and to have two children.
Who suddenly calls Valerie? Jean-David.
How does the conversation go with Jean-David? Their conversation , ended up leading to him wanting and asking to see her soon before back on leave.

How is it for Valerie to when she gets back to base? Its not that easy going back to being 3810159 after all the emotion of the weekend back at home.
When will they actually get the chance to fire real bullets? The next day– were they will fire real bullets for the first time.
How many get to fire at a time? Each company is divided in two , groups of ten.
What do those that aren't firing do? The soldiers who aren’t shooting have to stay within a security perimeter.
What happens if they walk out without permission? Anyone who leaves without permission is liable to a month’s imprisonment.
Why isn’t Valerie feeling okay? Valerie not really feeling okay she just thinking to much about the implications.
What is Valerie frighten about? She’s just worried that what if she really had to shoot, to shoot a person , in flesh and blood.
What does Tsahal mean? It’s the initial letters of the Israeli defense army. That you’ll never have to use your weapon against someone unless that someone is threatening your life.
What do they have to swear to ? With their right hands on the bible and the rifle to their left , they solemnly swore the oath. To stay loyalty to Tsahal and to the state of Israel and swear that they shall respect life and protect it.

Chapter 10
What does Valerie do while she waits? While shes waiting for some guy she pulls out her book and starts to read like she hasn’t read in so long.
Where is Valerie at? Valerie is heading into a dismal room.
Why were they asked to attend at the dismal room? They were asked to come to get a release form for it and a permit to leave the base.
How does Valerie feel free? She feels freer than ever to have in this heavily laden bus along the roads she said.
Who is she keeping the truth from ? Jean-David.
Which truth is she keeping? That she wants to impress him , to delight him , to and to seduce him.
What is her point in telling him the truth? She’s counting on Tsahal to help her win back her first love.
Where does she plan on going for leave? To Jean-Davids house.
How does it go with Jean-David? Once they seen each other they kissed and hugged.
Does Valerie stay the night with him? Valerie stays the night with him and imagines it as if they were two children in love , as if it was stronger than making love, it was more beautiful than all the other beautiful moments of her life together.

Why is school to Valerie like school to the power of ten? Because they study from eight in the morning till midnight, with breaks to unwind while we carry out latrine duties.
What does Valerie write about ? She writes about death, about emptiness, happiness which just last for moments, about Jean-David and to Jean-David but doesn’t even send to him.
What does the tripple S stand for? Tripple S= the spy, who spies, on the spies.
How did Valerie do on the psychometric tests? Apparently she did really well, and joined the army.
What happens if you tell anyone about what you learn in the military? you will be forbidden to talk to anyone about what they learn.
Has Valerie been keeping in touch with her friends back at home? She stays in touch with her main ones, so they do write each other though.
What do the girls plan for when she goes on leave? They’ve planned to party all weekend. And got tickets to see the taming of the shrew, and go to the beach.
Why doesn’t she get to leave after all? Because she's to stay and do three guard duties.
How does she feel about not going on leave for the first time? She’s going to bury the pain of not seeing the people she needs most in the world.
What is the reason why she has to stay? She has to stay because she has been selected to be in the intelligence service.

Chapter 12
How does Valerie spend the weekend? She spent the weekend between the classroom , the guardroom and the phone box.
How does Valerie feel about the test? She believes she has passed the test.
Why is Valerie crying? She wasn’t feeling good, and started getting pains that awaken her body and rises up to her head, amplifying every second and filling my skull which feels to explode.
What do they do to help? They get an ambulance to take soldier to casualty.
What happens at the hospital when she awakes? A nurse tells her that she's better and that she’ll be able to go back to the base today.
Why did Valerie want to be alone by her self before going back to base ? She wanted to be alone and to think , but however hard she try , the mechanism in her brain seemed to be incontrovertibly blocked.
Why does she just want her time alone and just sleep? Because she wants to stop seeing that fear that she suddenly seems to inspire in them all.
Why does she decide to get back to lessons so soon? Because if she misses another day , shes going to break all records for inadequacy on the course by getting a mark below fifty and that would make her ill.
What is Valerie worried about? She's worried about a meeting she's to attend with headquarters that are based in Tel Aviv.

Who is Ronen Tal? He is one that’s in need to talk to Valerie.
How does Valerie feel about being in the army? She reply’s F.. Fine , and starts hesitating.
What does being a woman mean to Valerie? It means living more intensely than a man, because we have very powerful physical experienced.
What does Ronen Tal tell Valerie? To go back to her base and she’ll then see her course through to the end.
What does Ronen suggest to Valerie? He suggested there is an psychologist , that way she can talk to someone from time to time.
Who is the Psychologist? Shlomit Dor <-
What does Tamar do for Valerie? He hands Valerie a form 524b: saying she has a meeting with Shlomit Dror at 10:30 tomorrow.
Does Valerie go to the meeting with Shomit? Yes. The note said they are to meet so , she attended.
What was wrong with Valerie? She opens up her file and it was said to be a syndrome commonly known as HYG.
Does Valerie end up taking Tamar ‘s advice after all? She certainly does , and is now starting to see her twice a week because she feels she’s one that actually listens.

Chapter 14
Where is Valerie currently working? Shes working in a bunker sorely lacking in aesthetic appeal.
How's Valerie scheduled? They do three eight hour shifts. Mornings , afternoon and night ,
What do they inform the air force? They inform the air force of any activities which collates all the information gathered by the various units.
What do they decode? In the evening they decode everything on the days significant tapes and they analyze the pilots combat techniques and what they’ve learned.
How do groups replace each other? They replace each other in a never ending sequence, with the newcomers gradually becoming the old hands as their predecessors move on.
How does Valerie feel in this chapter? She feels good, and finally sees herself as useful , in the real world at last.
What good news does she get for the following day? Tomorrow they’ll be celebrating four months in the army , and we’ll be promoted to corporals by our commanding officer, Ouri.
Where did the ceremony take place? The ceremony took place in the courtyard outside the refectory.
What is Valerie now place and named by? She is now Private Valerie Zenatti, Corporal in Tsahal, the Israeli army.
What's her definition of the real Valerie? The real Valerie is fragile , disorientated one, listens meekly to the other Valerie , the one who has an answer to everything , the one who never gives up, the one who shakes people awake with a lyrical , but still convincing voice.

Where are they on leave to? For the first time in many weeks the whole group is back on leave in Beersheva.
What does Freddy ask Valerie to do? He asks Valerie to sing at his daughters reception.
Where does she head for a couple of hours on leave? Well after getting her corporals strips she went to go watch a French cultural centre and watched a really good programmed about the French Revolution.
What did they learn in school? That they live in a wonderful country which people built with their own hard work and by fighting against other states who wanted to see it die.
Why join the army? They were told it was now their turn to give something to our country to join the army and follow in the footsteps of the heroes who defended the state.
How long has she been living in Israel? 5 years.
How many km are between Beersheva and the first Palestinian? 20 km desert-like country.
Why is it better when it rains? Its better when it rains because they wont get so many stones.
How the bus ride going for Valerie? She got her nose pressed up against the window to see everything.
Why does Valerie start to cry? Because of each impact of each stone inflicts pain on her as if she’s being hit. She didn’t know what to think she was just frightened.

Chapter 16
February 25th? Valerie manages to get a hold of Jean-David on the phone.
What happened on the phone with Jean-David? They had a talk about her leave, and for her to come over for the night.
Does Valerie end up going over? She wasn’t going to accept rejection so , she kept fighting until she had a yes.
Who’s make-up bag does Valerie find? She finds out that its not a cousins make up bag and turns out to be some girls.
Who is this girl , Jean-Dean brought home? A girl that’s 22 , or 23. who he met,
How does things end up with him? She ends up just leaving out the door and getting on her bus back to base.
What happens when she gets back on base? She offers for two girls shifts and sings all night to get him off her mind.
When is Valeries birthday? April 1st. She’ll be 19.
How does she feel the first couple days on leave? For the first couple of days of her leave she felt completely disorientated.
What does Valerie do for her birthday? Yulia and Freddy and herself go clubbing in Tel Aviv ,

Chapter 17
How does she spend the rest of her birthday? She celebrates her 19th birthday in the bus taking her back to the base.
What happening at base? Everyone is getting new code names.
Does anybody at base know its her birthday? Yea amman , says in French to her in front of everyone happy birthday . That its his co pilots bday.
What happened to her leave? Her leave got postponed indefinitely.
Does she end up leaving? She ends up leaving but she goes to the soldiers hostel.
How does Valerie feel? She feels euphoric.
Why don’t valerie ring home , and tell them about leave? Because they might have been upset that she hadn’t done anything she could to spend those hours at home or with her friends.
What does Valerie do once she gets to the soldiers Hostel’s? she goes and walks on the beach.
Who is this homosexual she meets on the beach? This guy who took the bac with her. And everything they start talking and being their for each other.
The last day at the Hostel what do they suggest ? They suggest to go back to the sea at dawn and wait for the first rays of light together.

Update on Gali? Her and Gali have established their headquarters in Sheinkin Road.

1. Who does Hannah go to for help? Did he help her? Hannah went to Mr. Porter for help , he tired to help Hannah but i don't think he help her right or good enough to help her and plus he just let her go.
2. Describe Hannah’s conversation with Mr. Porter? Hannah's conversation with Mr.Porter was not what Hannah expected .. Hannah made her self very clear and he made her feel like ok like she needs to move on and just get over it , but Hannah wanted help and thats all his options he gave her.
3. Do you think Mr. Porter could have helped Hannah? How? Mr. Porter could have helped Hannah in many ways like he could of got her serious to help and most importantly he could of helped by just going after her instead of just letting her go.
4. Why do you think Mr. Porter didn’t go after Hannah when she left him in the office? I honestly don't get why he didn't go after Hannah when she left the office he should have but i think he didn't because he tried and he probably didn't expect more of it.

5. Hannah - Hannah tried to get help . , Mr.Porter - Mr.Porter was a consoler that tried to help Hannah but Hannah walked off and he let her go. Clay - Clay listened to Hannah try to get help but ended up hearing her last words.

Cassette 6: Side B

1. Hannah decided to pop pills and overdose because she was DONE and through with everything.
2. Clay last saw Hannah in the Hall ways where they bumped each other and there last words to each other were "I'm sorry" .
3. Bryce called Hannah over a tall wooden fence to go home.
4. Hannah knew it was the worst choice possible so she went for it and got in the hot tub .

5. Bryce harassed Hannah in the hot tub . Hannah wanted to be in the worst choices possible. Courtney was also in the tub but left Hannah and Bryce alone together . & Clay cut his hand from hitting the fence when he was mad .

6. In this chapter things were taken place in the streets and the incident at the hot tub and at the store .

7.. My favorite part in this chapter was when she was explaining the way Bryce was touching her because the way she explained was real and it reminded me of the way a friend explained to me before .

8. I can relate to the sexual harassment in this chapter.

Ch. 12 Cassette 6: Side A
1. Tony's connected to the tapes because he could of done something to save Hannah .
2. Hannah gave Tony her blue bike .
3.Hannah left the package of tapes outside Tony's house .
4. Hannah gave Tony the second set of tapes so he could understand and have each and every one of them to hear what she has to say .
5.Jenny is a cheerleader from the Student Body Office , and she's on the tape because she was in a car accident with Hannah, and because the accident of the old man .
6. Jenny didn't stop at the stop sign so when they hit she was pissed and was saying shes not drunk , she thought Hannah was accusing her so she had her get out the car .
7. The old man died in the car accident .
8. Tony - first to have the tapes , Jenny - the cheerleader & the cause of accident , Clay - the listener and Hannah - the witness .

9. In this chapter it took place at the party , where the accident took place and at the gas station .

11. I only could relate in this chapter by someone being in an accident , me calling the cops though and someone hiding the truth .

1.Justin and Jessica walked into the bedroom that Hannah was in.
2.I think Hannah did nothing to stop the rape because maybe she was afraid and like afraid of what he could do to her as well.
3.Hannah was hiding in the closet.
4.Hannah blames herself and Justin for the girl being raped because they could of stopped it , but Hannah blames herself and him for letting her down.
5.Justin - took advantage of Jessica , Jessica - was drunk , Hannah - seen the whole incident .
6.In this chapter the setting took place in Tony's car , in the streets , where the party was.
